In recent months, Chipotle has become synonymous with illness, sickening hundreds of people with E. coli, salmonella, and norovirus.
To address its badly hampered public image and develop more effective food safety practices, Chipotle will close all its restaurants on Feb. 8 for a short period of time, the Wall Street Journal reports.
As the illnesses linked to Chipotle increased, the company's sales dropped 30 percent, and its stock plummeted almost 40 percent. A shareholder lawsuit has been filed and the company was put under federal investigation.
To begin to rehabilitate the company, Chipotle hired a food safety expert, started testing produce before shipping it to stores, and improved its food handling procedures, company spokesman Chris Arnold told the Chicago Tribune.
